Reactor 4
After the explosion, the Ukrainian and USSR Government needed a method to contain the radiation. It was known as the “Shelter Object” and it was completed in December of 1986.
The reactor site after the explosion was devastating. This picture was taken several months after the reactor exploded. There was nothing left of reactor four, and the radiation that contaminated the area was immense.
Here, you can see a mass of radiation, also known as the “Elephant Foot”. It consists of corium, a radioactive material formed in the accident. Initially, only a few minutes of exposure would cause death.
Today, the Ukrainian Government has built a stronger coffin to contain the radiation and prevent it from spreading anymore.
Unit 1
This image shows the inside of Block 1 in the reactor and what it looked like before the explosion occurred.
Liquidators
Volodymyr Kaliuzhnyi was one of the many liquidators to have helped stop the accident and is honored in the Monument to Those Who Saved The World.
Located South of the reactor in the town of Chornobyl, this Monument was built in 2006 to honor the liquidators that worked to stop the Chernobyl accident. It is known as the Monument to Those Who Saved The World for their efforts to stop the explosion and the sacrifice which they made.
